Brittsense Artist Talk at Betti Ono

  • Betti Ono Gallery 1427 Broadway Oakland, CA, 94612 United States (map)

Betti Ono is pleased to present, 222ForgottenCities: The Power of Melanin, a solo exhibition by Brittani "BRITTSENSE" Sensabaugh

Opening Reception and Artist Talk:
First Friday, February 5th, 2016
Talk will begin promptly at 7:00pm

The Power of Melanin is an extension of a larger project, “222ForgottenCities”, in which BRITTSENSE traveled through urban cities across the United States - including but not limited to Oakland, New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles - documenting the genuine nature of areas that had been deemed ‘unsafe’ and ‘decrepit’ by mass media. As she compared the resulting images, she realized that the atmosphere of the neighborhoods she photographed melted into one other and became difficult to differentiate outside of their respective street signs and landmarks thus creating one fictional, unified place, titled the “Forgotten City”.

As the vision for the project matured, so did the mission:

*222Movement* - “I have documented Oakland, New York, Philly, Baltimore, Houston, Chicago, Watts- Los Angeles, and the story in all of these places sound and look the same. I make it my business to shoot places that are looked down upon by mass media. My overall mission is to document communities that have been forgotten and people who feel they have no voice. I shoot to bring awareness to the individuals living inside and outside these areas by showing that WE all share the same struggle and love" - brittsense

BRITTSENSE was born and raised in Oakland, California and currently lives in New York City. You are invited to learn more about her life and work by joining the online community here:
